When choosing a health checkup center in Korea, it is worth checking what kind of CT scanner is being used.
Some centers still use older systems such as 16-detector-row CT scanners, while others use much newer-generation equipment.
If you have decided to undergo CT as part of a health checkup, it is generally better to choose a center with a newer scanner whenever possible.
Why Does a Newer CT Scanner Matter?
Newer CT systems generally offer:
- faster scanning
- thinner image acquisition
- better image reconstruction
- improved motion reduction
- more advanced radiation-dose optimization
These advantages can improve image quality while also allowing the examination to be performed more efficiently.
Modern scanners also use technologies such as automatic exposure control, iterative reconstruction, and deep-learning reconstruction to help reduce radiation while maintaining diagnostic image quality.
A newer scanner does not automatically guarantee a low-dose examination, because the actual dose still depends on the protocol and how the scanner is operated.
However, newer systems provide much better tools for balancing image quality and radiation exposure.
What Are the Limitations of Older CT Scanners?
Older CT scanners can still produce diagnostic images, but they may be less suitable when subtle abnormalities need to be detected.
For example:
- brain CT may show poorer gray-white matter differentiation
- abdominal CT may be more limited for rapid multiphase imaging
- chest CT may provide less optimal thin-section or multiplanar images
- coronary CTA may be difficult or unsuitable on older systems
This matters in health screening because the patient is usually asymptomatic, and the purpose of imaging is often to detect relatively small or subtle abnormalities.
Does the Number of Detector Rows Tell You Everything?
No.
A 128- or 256-slice scanner is not automatically better than every 64-detector-row scanner.
CT performance also depends on:
- scanner generation
- rotation speed
- detector design
- reconstruction software
- dose-reduction technology
- examination protocol
- technologist experience
- radiologist experience
However, detector count still gives you a rough idea of the generation and capabilities of the equipment.
For coronary CTA in particular, current cardiac CT standards generally require at least a 64-detector-row system with appropriate cardiac capabilities.
Which CT Examinations Are Most Affected by Scanner Performance?
Scanner performance matters for all CT examinations, but particularly for:
- low-dose chest CT
- coronary CT angiography
- vascular CT
- multiphase abdominal CT
- thin-section imaging
For a simple non-contrast brain CT, scanner generation may be somewhat less important than the more fundamental limitation that MRI provides much more detailed evaluation of brain tissue.
Should You Avoid 16-Detector-Row CT?
If there is no alternative, a 16-detector-row scanner can still be useful for many routine examinations.
But health screening is usually elective.
You can often choose between several hospitals or screening centers before making an appointment.
If similar centers are available, there is little reason to deliberately choose older CT technology.
What Should You Ask Before Booking?
A simple question is enough:
“What CT scanner do you use for health screening?”
If CT is an important part of the package, you can also ask:
- how many detector rows the scanner has
- whether low-dose protocols are available
- which scanner is used for coronary CTA
Many Korean hospitals and screening centers publish their CT equipment on their websites.
The Bottom Line
CT scanners are not all the same.
If you are going to undergo CT as part of a health checkup, choosing a center with newer-generation equipment is generally preferable.
Modern CT scanners offer better tools for faster acquisition, thin-section imaging, advanced reconstruction, and radiation-dose reduction.
This does not mean that the scanner alone determines the quality of an examination. Good protocols and experienced imaging staff are also important.
But if you are going to be exposed to radiation anyway, it makes sense to aim for the best-quality examination at the lowest reasonably achievable dose.
